In many of our past blogs, we talked about the impact that lead has upon children. We discussed some of the common symptoms of lead poisoning, and what you should do if you suspect that your child is suffering due to an exposure to lead.

In this post, we want to discuss a recent study that examines the long-term impact on children who have been exposed to lead early in their lives. The results of this study show just how important it is for you to take immediate action in order to protect your child’s future.

Research focused on the big picture

recent study regarding lead exposure wanted to examine the socio-economic status of the children who had high blood lead levels. That is, the study wanted to know if the lead exposure prevented kids from reaching their full potential. Researchers examined the background of the parents, and gathered IQ and other data to see if there was any correlation between blood lead levels and a child’s future potential as an adult.

To gather this data, many children born in the 1970s and 1980s in New Zealand had blood lead levels checked. More than three decades later, the kids who showed high blood lead levels were more likely to be suffering some sort of economic effects from the exposure to the lead.

The results, posted in the Journal of American Medicine, show just how dangerous be for children, and how much of an impact this can have upon their future. The researchers concluded that there is no safe level of lead in the bloodstream, and also that the damage done is unable to be reversed. The effects of the exposure last a lifetime.

It was the very first time that a study focused on the economic situations of kids exposed to lead. The work has lead officials throughout the U.S. to express repeat concerns regarding lead exposure. If the problems remain unaddressed, more children could suffer do to the lack of protections in place.
